Lack of liquidity definitely earns you a premium return, but it is very painful when the market falls out of bed like it did in 2008/2009. Those who loaded up on illiquid stuff in 2007 just got killed. In those situations, you just have to hold on for the ride, since there is no way to get out at a decent price. And of course you have to buy investments that can survive a downturn.
