This is old news but is worth discussing. US Wireless had tried to market their wireless terminals directly. The source of revenues was supposed to be the sales of the units to the end customer and the sales pitch was pretty much; "rip out your old unit and install this baby, and trust us to replace the industry leader." That sales effort didn't work out and the company neraly went bankrupt. Then they got the smart idea of selling a new unit thru the telcos and OEMs that enable a merchants existing card swipe terminals to communicate over cellular packet wireless. They keep the line system in place as a backup or until they have confidence in the Tranz Enabler. The telco benefits because they gain a new wireless customer, the mechant benefits because he doesn't have to buy anything and USWDA benefits because they get a small piece of every transaction - part of the fee that merchants already pay to someone else.

Leviakis provided critical funding when the company was very risky and they helped their strategic efforts. In this respect they served as a venture capaital firm. The fact that they will make huge rewards from their venture shouldn't shock anyone. If you want to do the work and take the risks of the venture capital guys, you should get the rewards if your gamble strikes on success.
