Thanks Derek. Another thing I'm going to do is watch the Friday Intel presentation (multi-media presentation is available in INTC web site), and find out exactly what they said about this. It's possible the reporter may have been making assumptions about multi-media including modems.

I need to do some research into these so called modem chips and their power requirements because I just don't see how you can just ad a chip to a motherboard and presto-you have a working modem.

Wasn't it Analog Devices that has a modem chip?

Could be, that sort of rings a bell. Wasn't that one of those "soft modems"?
