Sure. Alpha's were supposed to wipe out Pentiums, too. Now it's Pentium IIs.

Kim noted Microsoft has said its Windows NT 5.0 will incorporate Digital's FX132 binary translation utility to make native NT applications run without needing an external translator. Translation cuts the speed of an NT application by about 50 percent, but that may not matter much when you start out above 400MHz.

Just because a chip is clocked twice as fast doesn't mean that it executes code twice as fast. If it did then the 400 MHz / 2 = 200 MHz and you can buy 300 MHz P-IIs from Gateway for $2499.

Yes sir! Them Alphas is so good DEC dumped 'em!

Richard,
" Intel now owns the same licensed Alpha rights as Samsung. "
Yes this is my understanding too. Although, I consider Samsung to possibly be a long term threat to Intel....(one that I worry about), I don't think they are ready to mount significant competition to Intel, just yet.

Samsung's Alpha does not have many features such as AGP, MMX
(Tm), WFM, etc. May I remind you that DEC was unable to pose a lasting threat to Intel with the Alpha chip, when it first came out, dispite similar performance claims. As has been posted here many times, the ability to manufacture a fast and cheap Risk chip is one thing, selling them in volume is another.
