I remember having a conversation with the CEO of the company I used to work for - a Fortune 100 - who warned about government intrusion 20 years ago. Since the majority of our contracts were with the government, he said they walked a thin line when designing the systems. The subject came up because we had won a contract to do the computer systems for the IRS. The government started demanding "features" that would give them more access to people's private lives. It was a huge issue at the time with the company refusing to accommodate them. I doubt they have the same sort of people in charge there now.
