Nexar's Patented ''Future Ready'' PC XPA Helps Computer City
Address Customers' PC Obsolescence, Cost of Ownership Issues
Nexar Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:NEXR - news), a manufacturer of customizable and upgradable PCs, and Computer City, Inc., one of the largest computer superstores in North America, today announced an all encompassing, strategic and technology agreement that designates Nexar as a major PC supplier to Computer City through its nationwide superstore network. Based on the agreement, Nexar expects Computer City to be its largest reseller partner in 1998.
Under the agreement, Computer City will offer Nexar's XPA (Cross Processor Architecture) PCs to corporate, small business, government and education customers through its corporate sales division and at its 96 superstores throughout the U.S. and Canada.
''XPA's cost effective upgradable PC design, combined with Nexar's innovative business approach, provides an opportunity for Computer City to offer our customers this unique PC,'' said Nathan Morton, co-chairman and chief executive of Computer City. ''Our customers are constantly looking for ways to reduce their ownership costs. XPA provides a clearly differentiated PC that enables Computer City to reduce our customer's costs through technology investment protection.''
''Nexar's aggressive pursuit of Computer City is a direct reflection of our confidence in their new direction and in the respect we have for their management team,'' said Albert J. Agbay, chairman and chief executive officer, Nexar Technologies, Inc. ''Our agreement goes far beyond the typical supplier relationship as it leverages both the flexibility of the Nexar XPA PC as well as our business methodology. In the end, Computer City's customers will win by having a system that can truly attack the total cost of ownership challenge by extending the PC's useful life.''
Beginning this month, Computer City will offer custom configured XPA systems. Each system will be built according to individual customer specifications, depending upon their requirements for hard drive, processor, memory, cache, video cards and modem. Computer City plans to target each of its customers segments -- individuals, businesses, government organizations and educational institutions -- by offering a variety of options for placing orders. Customers also will be able to custom-configure and place orders via the Computer City web site.
Computer City superstores will also highlight the XPA in their Business Solutions Centers, where customers can configure and purchase their systems from Computer City. Depending on customers' specific requirements for system configuration and quantity, Nexar or Computer City will handle final integration and delivery. Corporate and government customer divisions will market Nexar systems on a Configure-to-Order basis. In addition, Computer City will become an authorized service vendor for Nexar and will provide convenient technical service and training through its nationwide network of 96 computer superstores.
About Nexar XPA
XPA is a family of minitower systems that deliver unprecedented upgradability of all major system components and support for the industry's broadest range of microprocessors -- Intel's Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II and Dual Pentium II -- all in a single system. Designed to support future generation technologies, XPA systems enable Nexar's customers to battle the ongoing personal computer obsolescence problem by providing a significant increase in the lifecycle of their PC.
Targeted at medium to large businesses and government markets, the highly flexible XPA PC allows VARs and end-users to easily configure and upgrade their systems based on their specific computing requirements for processor, memory, cache and hard drive. This is accomplished through the XPA PC's highly innovative split motherboard design and easy access chassis, which allow for easy upgrades both within processor families and across multiple processor platforms. This gives resellers thousands of configuration options and unmatched scalability.
Nexar recently announced that the U.S. Patent Office issued a patent covering the architecture technology that is the foundation of Nexar's products. These products combat obsolescence and protect users' PC investments through simple and cost-effective upgrades.
