(Using a stricter definition of intelligence) I suspect that those mythical frameworks are direct links to our own prehistory. Not civil prehistory, but something more profound. I am beginning to believe that the religious impulse, and the huge amounts of story that it spawned, are the "microwave background" of sapience.
What do I mean by that?
I think that the religious impulse is one of the last great holdovers of our prehuman animal nature. We have an instinct for religion that has little to do with our newfound capacity for reason. The idea that we might be lonely minds in an unaware, randomness-driven cosmos is instinctively repugnant to most people. In my opinion, doubting an engaged deity, taking sole (sic!) responsibility for one's being and doing, requires a special sort of moral courage.

I don't think we differ on the assertion that ID seems to be making. They (it looks) decry natural selection as "random" and therefore seem to claim to falsify it in favour of "intelligence" as shown by "designs".

We may differ in that I think that Natural selection is no more random or unintelligent than anything else! In fact you have intelligent life forms creatures doing (plenty of) the selecting.

Where I would think we agree is that even ignoring the above and differing definitions of "intelligence", you have "patterns" or "designs" in the selecting, just like you have everywhere else.
