I think the biggest point here is that each of us may have different standards about how or if we would want to continue living, but the government should not have any say in the matter. Quick and painless euthanasia should be an acceptable option and private decision between each person and his/her doctor. Men like Jack Kevorkian are heroes in my opinion. The government that imprisoned him is the fiend, not Kevorkian! My wife and I both have living wills. If I am in a wreck and lying in broken pieces across the interstate, and the paramedics show up to revive me, my orders are to let me die. Yes, if I am conscious and suffering horribly, please administer pain meds, but do not save me, revive me, or stop the death process if it appears that I will not have a reasonable chance at recovery and the ability to "wash my own ass" for the rest of my life. We also have a medical power-of-attorney clause in our wills. If I am incapacitated, in the hospital, and artificially sustained only by life-support, my wife has full permission, and in fact my orders, to pull my plug and let me die. I recommend that everyone have a living will and a medical power-of-attorney to take the burden off of your families and loved ones. Then, communicate your desires to everyone in your family and extended family. It would do to have your grieving wife preparing for the painful decision to pull your plug, while your sister is screaming at her, "You murderous bitch! You just want his estate and the insurance! Don't kill my brother!" So, make sure sis knows you want to die and the choice is not her's or your wife's.
