Germany taught me a lesson. Walking on Saturday afternoon. In 3 minutes the street was taken by police.
It was chilling and windy. No one in the streets. At about 6PM.
(Southern Munich).

I was walking to the pub for a beer and heard police sirens. Normally that is ambulance or 'Notartz' as they call it there.

This time was a plain clothes policeman on a bike. Entered the street using the sidewalk, like a mad guy, on top of the trash cans and stop at a long building where the construction crews lodge. (By them I was walking in the middle of the deserted street.)

Immediately I though: Some Yugoslavians pulled the knives after a few hard drinks.

A police car made a turn, made an U Tunr climbing the sidewalk and went in. I guess this was the back up car. Two more police cars appeared.

This happened while I walk 100 or 150m.

The place was under control. You would think that the place was peaceful and in no need of police. But if the need arised:
they were there in 5 minutes or less.

I guess they have many plain clothes policemen in bikes who spear head the action, appraise quickly and give instructions on the situation.

In America crime is a way of life, it is systemic, nurtured from childhood, taught from several POV's...from the poor and destitute to the white collar lawyers, bankers, brokers, insurance agents, salesmen, and more....

it is perpetuated under the guise of "standard of living enhancement" as well as necessary for the continued use of drugs as in habitual...

we live in an "Anything goes as long as you don't get caught" environment.

for the "not so tidy crime" we defense it by allowing our citizenery to arm itself with guns openly and as concealed on the person...

it is considered both necessary and macho to have a concealed weapons permit...

it is basically a necessary form of survival, just depends on the level of the crime...

I suspect from what I read, see and hear that NZ is a victim of its own Liberalism...an unfortunate byproduct of higher education as in University, College, etc....

in your specific case it might be better (for you) to become a player as opposed to a perpetual complainer, whiner...
