"IF" X, "then" Y is qualified by "could", implying a conjectural, not absolute relationship. "A plus" also implies it is not an absolute requirement. You inferred a direct causal connection without seeing the qualifications.

Your read would be correct if they stated:

"Exposure to Asia means risk, so the absence of Asian exposure will be necessary."

That said, inclusion on one list did not necessarily abrogate chances of making the other. Strength among the other factors must have put Schlumberger on the final list, overwhelming the negative implication of "exposure".
