My inclination and observation is that the Wikileaks are good and that the people doing it have good intentions and are achieving good things.

I am not so sure, though my inclination is that the more transparency, the better.

My hesitation in fully endorsing your view is that in order for diplomacy to succeed, there has to be a free and unencumbered flow of information from ambassadors and other representatives to their bosses. The information has to be frankly stated with known facts expressed honestly to support any conclusions which may be made. If this information is leaked, the information is likely to become bowdlerized. This of course is detrimental to the ultimate product which is presumably an honest assessment of the host country's capabilities and intentions.

I think the whole wikileaks episode will be a tempest in a teapot. Diplomats all over the world express themselves frankly to their government. It is part of a well-known process. That it is exposed is regrettable but ultimately harmless.

In any event, the State Department will make sure this never happens again.

Fodder for the gossipeers, at the end of the day.
