I think 3COM and ASCEND should work together on the standard 56Kbps. Now they are killing each other by creating confusion to the consumers. The sliding stock prices reflect the slower demand for users to upgrade to 56Kbps. Besides the confusion, the performance (speed) increase from 33.6Kpbs to 48Kbps isn't much incentive. You normally get 48Kbps from analog line and 53.3Kbps from ISDN line even they claim 56Kbps. The bottleneck on the bandwidth also causes people less incentive to pursue higher performance of microprocessor. The boom of the $1000 PC may explain the reason. The fight between X2 and 56Flex are stupid and short-sighted. Intead of alluring the customers (ISPs and consumers) to lineup on the upgrade frenzy, they create the fuzzy. The technology evolves so rapidly nowadays, I don't know why they are fighting for 56K instead of putting the energy to provide what the users want - 1Mbps!!
It's the INTERNET generate the boom of the whole IT industry. The stagnant of the bandwidth will cause the whole industry stagnant.
