each time some mainland chinese fellow goes into the slammer due to political reasons, china becomes a better place due to such personal courage, because at the end and start of any and every day, the mainland authorities are fearful of its fellows and fellowettes, and so authoritarian becomes enlightened authoritarian

the 'free' world's path to solution is just not obvious, because, as assange had noted, the elites are wired in at the chromosome level and geno lattice stage, micro coded, part of the rule by making up laws way, and by my guess, not only no obvious cure, but no cure, i fear

the generalized cure is very small government and very qualified leaders, starved of mandate and selected by merit per benchmark of minimal intervention. unfortunately such really only works for very small domains (hong kong, switzerland) as opposed to simply small sub-domains (cities, neighborhoods) within large supra-domains (federated states and nations of large population)

the next best thing is simply trend of whether government is getting smaller or bigger

and the trend has something to do with whether middle class with disposable income are growing or shrinking and the underlying trends affecting same

just a guess

i believe most folks, when thinking about the above, tend to fall into group think, fall back on creation myths, and backstop with slogans; for they cannot do anything other than what they were micro code instructed, like the human batteries of the movie "matrix" - they do not know they are batteries.

on a related issue ...

i am raising my young so that they would wish to be their own boss, as opposed to joining big organizations and travel along a proscribed path. alas, vast majority of education facilities turn out clones, and so the culture of being sovereign self becomes important.

sovereign self, as a concept, to me, is a very different idea than the much more frequently mouth-breathed 'individualism'

some champion individualism as if that be what powers creation, because the thinking is clouded by to much teaching and not enough reflection.

in hk, we do not push individualism, but champion sovereign self.

in the overseas chinese and perhaps jewish and a few other old cultures most wish, scheme, try, try again, to being ones own boss, of how ever large or tiny organization - it is almost the 'all there is'. there are such folks in all cultures, and uniquely in hong kong, almost all from all over the world are setting up to be or are already sovereign, because of necessity. for aside from banking, hotel, port management, and shipping companies, we have no large employers to count on for sustenance, and unlike many locales, there is no social safety net to catch the fallen, and we cannot just dig up rocks to sell what hides beneath. besides the above four types of private entities, almost all other i can think of existing in hk leads the apprentice to eventually be sovereign (trading, law, medicine, dentistry, architect, ....).

for the men in hk, our wives push us to be sovereign, and for the women, the husbands wish to have a backstop. for the children we try to instill what we must so that

given that no one individual / small organization can truly be a jack of all trades, we in hk must then aggregate into partnerships and create and/or join up in alliances, either as individuals or as lead of quite small organizations. in such a mode of operation, the 'i am individualistically swaggering' would get the twit exactly one step forward and then be thrown out.

hk is good for creating sovereign individuals who are not necessarily of the individualistic swaggering bent, because we have no large organizations, iow, while we can say "i wish to grow up and be a geologist", but to be such and based in hk, one must be a consulting geologist for many i-banks on ad hoc basis, i.e. must be a geology consulting sovereign self with own name on door plate.

imperatives create solutions, and small is more than beautiful.

amen.
