I think I am in disagreement with the majority of opinions here on wikileaks. The content of the releases is important and will need to be dealt with, but a much more important issue is the willingness to support and defend Assange. Its a mob like mentality that will end badly. The material released was obtained illegally. What is to prevent someone from posting your private communication? Tap your phone and release that? Put a hidden camera in your bedroom and release that on youtube? I see no difference between that and what wikileaks is doing.

The second problem with wikileaks is what proof or guarantee do we have that what is released has not been modified. It certainly has been edited. Do we trust the wikileaks editor to be fair? Hardly. They may be suppressing memos that would exonerate individuals that are incriminated by other memos.
