Case in point [that standards can be licenced, and not set by the standards bodies (non-vendor oriented)].
Rambus's RDRAM technology. In about 2 years it will totally replace all current forms of memory chips producted today. They have signed (licensed) every major chip manufacturer. At first many of them resisted, but one by one they tendered up the $2mil license tribute and signed their royalty aggreement. It was that or back an improved SDram chip consortium and possibly get left out.

Jeff, your comparing apples to oranges here.
Performance DRAM is a commodity. Not a specification of interoperability between vendors, as a communications standard is.

Your comparison is like saying:
"You want drive? Buy our engine."
The other cars can have whatever engine they want to drive. It's their choice.

The standards comparison says:
"You want to drive? You must keep on the right side of the road"
Other cars to drive must follow the rules, or else they cant drive.

Very simple.....no confusion. Being a technology professional I see these things every day. In fact I'll be in Minniapolis in 1998 for the ITU-T conference (The US is hosting for the first time in decades). Not one single discussion will be on "what makes a car go fast". The only discussions taking place will be "what rules must be followed in order to drive your car with the other cars"

Not a bad comparison if I must say so for such a nieve person.<G>
