The porn sites are supposedly a big source of viruses and malware. My daughter (youngest) likes anime and I suspect some of those sites might be sources of viruses and malware. I have told her never, ever, to install anything without asking me first.

I plan to check out the Microsoft program. The one I'm running - Avast - clearly didn't protect my computer.

If your daughter has roomates who she suspects of using her computer, she definitely should password protect it. Tell her to check out the browser history to see if someone is using the computer when she's at work.

I don't get why they do it. They never see the results of what they do unless it's on the order of the Stutnix worm.

They can get money that comes from add revenue to the sites they direct you to. They might control your computer and use your computer to send out spam, or conduct a denial of service attack, or some other thing that could get them some money, or hurt someone they don't like. They can sometimes spy on your activity and get information to access your accounts or perform identity theft, or target you for scams.
