The readers' responses to this article: "All the President’s Captors By FRANK RICH" make some good points

May be the president could play hardball if he had a unified DEM party behind him but the Midwest senators keep selling him out.

<<It was particularly distressing to witness Mr. Obama offer the federal salary freeze concession, as he might as well have tossed it into a black hole. It is not a mark of honor, nor does it set a good precedent, to willingly give your lunch money to bullies. They don’t “respect” you for it. They laugh at you behind your back.

This tells the tale.

He had no reason to do that? No pressure. Government employee's are not overpaid. And leaving the wages intact could be considered a fair WPA (something Obama never did anything about); and it stimulates the economy, and certainly much more than tax cuts for the rich.

People who think this is not a center left nation forget that Obama campaigned on a pretty liberal platform and he won overwhelmingly because the kids and Independents thought Obama would clean up Wall street and the torturers.

When he not only didn't try, but seemed to placate them, they stayed home.

The reason the kids and Independents stayed home was becasue they see Obama as weak and that he broke campaign promises, one after another. Always with some lame excuse.
