The mistake here is the assumption that Obama is compromising Liberal principles. Who ever said he was a Liberal? This is a man who never makes it a point to call himself a Democrat. His campaign slogan was: "there is no Red America or Blue America, only a United States of America." Maybe, Obama has always viewed himself as a Centrist. And when a Centrist negotiates with Right Wingers, the result is ALWAYS to the Right of Center.
