Hawk... first the fear of the people in China that both TJ and I spout is important.. There is bad stuff like anywhere but it is a trip worth taking ... actually a plan to take a couple with gap would be even better :O) Be wary a bit of tours.. make sure you have flexible plans.. The tours tend to take you to all the government tourist stores which are OK ONCE each type... and you spend too much time eating at non local places.. Walking around and seeing the people is great.. I remember in 2007 one night all the rest of the folks with me (all family) were tired so my son and I went out around 10PM into Shanghai.. walked around till about midnight.. folks everywhere.. western kids with bikes an backpacks even... looking form a place to crash :O)..

Take the trip.. :O)

you can talk accountability all you wish in beijing or everywhere

and most on streets and in tea houses would talk with you, as long as you do not try to teach them chinese

what you cannot champion is but just one thing ... i.e. "let's overthrow the communist party", given that is the only ruling system

the equivalent sin in usa would be "let's rid of the constitution", given that is the ruling system (as opposed to republicans and democrats, even though the two parties are about as different as a white n black cat vs a black n white cat)
