Your grapevine theory is highly doubtful, IMO.

"Grapevine" may be the wrong word because it implies murky whisperings along murky channels (to me at least), but I'll certainly agree that their worry levels are dialed up, and that in general their sources of information are extensive and likely more reliable than what outsiders can access.
