In 2012, the results of the experiment of these two years will be in. Hence I do not for see any philosophical debates like we are seeing now. Either way Obama wins

That assumes unambiguous improvements in the economy and employment picture...not what most economists believe will happen. Obama may be left with the unenviable position of having to defend republican policies on the basis of "things would have been worse"...imagine that scenario with WH and senate on the line...and, if the picture doesn't improve and with a disaffected base, obama is at serious risk of losing to a republican, assuming their nominee is not a bible thumping intellectually challenged populist.

John is right...this scenario would point to another extension before the election.
