Seniors were the deciding factor that put the Republicans over the top in this fall's election. I hope they enjoy their lean benefit years that are coming under Republican control. Not that things were all that much better for them under the Democrats. No COLA for Social Security for the past two years during Democratic control, and only this late token $250 payment to try to make up for this shortfall, and even that was torpedoed by the Republicans because the Democrats have no leverage to pass it.

This is not the Democratic party I grew up with that made Social Security a central part of their governing strategy. Now the Democrats are acting like Republicans with their austere budget that freezes spending on Federal agencies, except a few in the defense and intelligence areas. If someone wants to opposes conservative government, where do they turn? The Democrats are trying to be more like Republicans with their lack support for Social Security and domestic spending budget freeze. We now have two conservative parties governing us in Washington, DC. How depressing.

The U.S. would have the most to gain percentage-wise from its share of an estimated $2.3 trillion clean energy economy by 2020, a new Pew report finds, if it adopted aggressive clean energy policies such as a national Renewable Energy Standard.

"most Republicans contended that the nation couldn't afford the estimated $14 billion cost of the payment"

So we can afford a 900B tax cut hit to the deficit, but we can't afford 14B expense hit?
Cool.

We also can't afford to address our crumbling infrastructure according to conservatives, but we can afford anything the military wants. Wars have an open checkbook from our conservative government. Let's face it, the military industrial complex now runs this country. It does not matter if Ds or Rs are in control of Congress.

John McCain Opposes Military Suicide Prevention Bill

Politically, John McCain rides high on his stint in the military, but for someone who purports to support those in the service, he spends a lot of time blocking bills to help them. The latest case in point: he's led the charge in stripping suicide prevention provisions in the defense authorization bill, denying potentially thousands of service members mental health care. According to Rep. Rush Holt, who introduced the legislation meant to prevent military suicides, McCain wasn't shy about voicing his opposition:

"Twice now, the Senate has stripped this legislation from our defense bill," Holt told The Huffington Post Tuesday. "It's hard to understand why. I know for a fact, because he told me, that Sen. McCain doesn't support it. Whether he's the only one, I don't know. But there was no effort to try to improve the language or negotiate changes; it was just rejected, and I think that is not only bad policy, but it's cruel. It's cruel to the families that are struggling with catastrophic mental health problems."

In November 2009, it was reported that more service members died from suicide than from fighting in Afghanistan. Read more at the Huffington Post.
