Expiration of the Bush tax cuts has always been the best-case objective of the liberal-progressive Democrats, including the professed objective of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. The discord between Obama and his Congressional counterparts may be more a contrived illusion than fact.

The Obama-Republican compromise seems to position progressives on both sides of the issue -- a win-win stance for them under existing political circumstance.

This strategy forces Republicans into a divisive position. Either Republicans hold to their professed fiscally responsible principles and the bill fails, or they surrender to numerous fiscally and socially irresponsible progressive inclusions.

If the bill passes Obama "the compromiser" takes responsibility for passage -- knowing that his apparent compromise was perverted and contains as many progressive objectives as possible. On the other hand if it dies at sunset, well then Obama did his best to sell the sham compromise and celebrates his tax-increase.

The economy is being held hostage and just where does that leave the incoming Republicans?
