Interestingly both shamans and those experiencing extreme mania ( there are levels ) share one commonality and that is the seemingly endless presence of birds. Birds factor into the shamans venture into the underworld by offering guidance and signs along the journey. They're considered integral to the process itself. In mania they're often, but not always, inescapable. As in ' many frequently flying into your windshield ' inescapable and somehow making their presence known which is difficult to describe.
