<<"Conservative Dems" are Dems. So it was the dems.>>

"A rose by any other name is still a rose." Those southern dems (dixiecrats) were hard core conservatives through and through. I ask again, why did not one state in the south have the decency to stop segregation.

They were conservative racists and you can call them anything you want. The majority of southerners never did support ending segregation. Why? That is racism dude. I don't think you know what racism is.

<<And it wasn't conservatives in general it was a specific group of Dems, more identified with being from the south and with supporting segregation than with generally being conservative.>>

They were totally conservative. The only reason they were in the democratic party at all was the fact that in those days the dems were the party of the worker and the Republicans the party of the corporations. After they left the dems the pubs busted their unions and sent them into the poverty they now have.

<<More to the point of my post that you responded to, voting against the bill does not imply racism, or support of or pandering to racists.>>

How can you say that? That is exactly how everyone saw it.

And I supposse the civil war had nothing to do with slavery?

Do you just not understand the history?
