Allying with Pakistan seems to be a case of the Sun Tzu philosophy gone wrong (enemy of my enemy is my friend) as it did in Afghanistan, Iraq.. etc etc..

Actually, I believe Sun Tzu stated something to that effect.

But the reality is that Pakistan, like many muslim countries with a secular population, is divided. It's a civil war within their societies so for us to "broad-brush" our foreign policy and declare them all to be militants is misguided.

Our real problem is that many of these secularists are so corrupt that they play upon our fears of their country "going militant" that they extort us for money and logistical support. And then they skim off a substantial portion of this money to their Swiss (or other) foreign bank accounts.

We need to deal with people who have "skin in the game" in these countries.. Or work to support moderate secularists who actually have the spine to confront these militant elements amongst them.

That's not easy to do.. So in the meantime, we waffle and support elements who's interests are not necessarily fully aligned with our own.

The alternative, however, is to let things play out and put India in the position where they have no choice but to deal with matters themselves. And few of us (including them) desire such an outcome.. The loss of human life would be horrendous and things could quickly spiral out of control and plunge the world into a huge conflagration.
