It is not a stretch to say the were hard core conservatives. It is the bible belt for gods sake. "from the bible belt" != "hard core conservative". Esp since conservatism is about more than religious/cultural/moral issues, but also even on those issues. And conservatives today are doing the same thing with the gays they did wiht the blacks. For the most part no. Gay bashing is exactly the same issue as racism. Gay bashing can mean different things, most of which are not relevant. There isn't much bashing going on here.
