"I realize that does happen, but imo it is rare" I meant it in a poetic way. Truly "choosing" to suffer is a pathology often associated with religious "beliefs" (tear your hair and rend your breasts, or vice versa--I forget)! Maybe it was beat your breasts and rend your clothes and tear or hair? Something very purifying, in any event--because it involved a combination of pain and admission of worthlessness--two venerated qualities in religion!
