"...nothing more than motivational tools for personal success" I don't think you understand what is meant by "personal redemption." That in itself is a long theological discussion. I'll share what I believe to be two ends of the spectrum. On one end is the fundamental view of man being a creature of sin and Jesus dying on the cross to atone for man's sins. On another end is the gnostic views, many contained in scriptures not included in the Bible when it was organized. I would likely fail at briefly explaining gnostic thought (which I greatly admire).
