You are splitting hairs to try and win an argument.

No, I was just pointing out a communication problem triggered by aberrant use of language.

Was there something being argued? If so, I missed it. I thought we were just chatting about our differing approaches to information gathering. Gotta have an issue before you can argue it. Had there been one, though, I would not have been trying to win it. I have no interest in winning arguments. That's not my thing. I make points. I try to understand the points others make and learn from them. And I amuse myself. Don't keep score.

I consider Bertrand Russell, James Joyce and Alfred North whitehead as major mentors for me.

What did you get them for Christmas? I have been a mentor. Always got a Christmas present. Just a token, of course. At the very least you would have met your mentors several times for coffee or tea. <g>

2. an influential senior sponsor or supporter.

As you can see, there is a personal relationship involved in a mentor relationship.
