Even if one reads scripture in the original language, one has to interpret the meaning. So what some people refer to as the "infallible word of God" becomes just one's own interpretation of the words as written.

Well, I didn't think it necessary to get any deeper. The scriptures, of course, don't contain the words of this carpenter. They have the memories, passed through the small group of followers, and then written. You may know that the oldest, best research says, were some of Paul's writings. Who was, of course, not a part of the original few.

So these are really memories of memories of a clearly charismatic guy. If you've ever played that little game--folk sitting in a circle, an originator whispers something, say a couple of sentences, in the ear of the person to her/his left, who whispers it to his/her left, and so on around the circle. The result frequently doesn't resemble the original.

That's why serious theologians talk about three interpretive moments: the memories of the early church, the church tradition, and the contemporary meaning frame. Lots and lots of issues in each point.
