JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South Africa’s mining production increased by 5,6% year-on-year in October, official data from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) showed on Thursday.
This followed on a 12% increase in September.
Stats SA’s mining production and sales report showed that seasonally adjusted mining output increased by 6,4% for the three months ended October 2010, compared with the three months ended July 2010.
The main contributors to this increase were platinum-group metals (PMGs), contributing 4,5 percentage points, and coal, contributing two percentage points.
Actual estimated total mining production increased by 9,6% for the three months ended October 2010, compared with the same three-month period in 2009.
Meanwhile, the total value of mineral sales between September 2009 and September 2010, increased by 34,1% to R27,8-billion.
The total seasonally adjusted value of minerals sales at current prices for the third quarter of 2010 reflected an increase of 6,9% to R4,99-billion, compared with the second quarter of 2010.
The increase was mainly as a result of increases in the sales value of PGMs, contributing 4,5 percentage points or R3,25-billion, gold, contributing two percentage points or R1,46-billion and coal, contributing 1,5 percentage points or R1,08-billion.
The actual estimated total value of minerals sales at current prices for the third quarter of 2010 increased by 29,3%, compared with the third quarter of 2009, mainly owing to PGMs, which contributed ten percentage points, or R6,06-billion, iron-ore’s contribution of 5,8 percentage points, or R3,53-billion, and gold’s contribution of 4,7 percentage points, or R2,89-billion.
