As it happens, I really don't care what Christians believe, since much of it is either just basic morality that even I, as an agnostic, am perfectly on board with, or stories about miracles that I don't believe occurred.

I do find it somewhat strange that you and Kate think that governments should not create safety nets because this is somehow only something that individuals or churches should get involved with. I don't see anything in Christian theology to suggest that is the case. But I have no real interest in arguing the point, since logic and reason don't play a large part in that belief system in the first place, which gives us no common ground for discussion.
