Madoff confessed to his sons that it was all a scam and they turned him in and neither has spoken to either of their parents since. The trustee just filed numerous lawsuits against the two sons and their children in an effort to find whatever money is left. Guess Mark figured if he was dead, they'd leave his kids alone. Mark's wife changed her last name and her kids' last name because of all the harassment they were getting.

<<Bernie Madoff made millions off of his scam. I wonder if he thinks it was worth it now.>> To pull it off the guy was smart. OTOH if he had used those smarts in a legal way he would have still had maybe a fewer million but he would still have had them and been living one hell of a lot better.
