Robert Redford wrote an article on Huffpo about a coal mine in Utah.

Someone named jorjxmckie commented:
I like the idea of a national "Week Without Coal" celebration. Let's get those miners out of those dangerous mines and have the plant workers stop pumping that vile toxin CO2 into the atmosphere. I bet the miners and plant workers would love to have a week off over the holidays. Let's make this a green christmas!!!

My only remark is when I was 24, I'd been living on my own for 6 years, most of it in Vermont, and I knew damn well you don't leave a house in the winter with the heat turned off, at least if you haven't drained the pipes first. I really think young folks today are totally lacking in common sense.

All that said, yes, a checklist would have been a good idea.

I have no idea if insurance will cover it since the damage was the result of negligence (stupidity?) by the owners' son.

We have a rental house in town. I went by after they'd left for Thanksgiving vacation and they'd turned the heat way down (i.e., 50). I restored the setting to 60.
