Not really. Compare the number of new docs hanging up private practice shingles with the number of old ones taking early retirement. The field is no longer medicine but rather processing claims for insurance companies, who dictate both allowable procedures and cost reimbursement. The trend is definitely toward Kaiser-type care for everyone. Today you see doctor #76, and next week if you come back, you'll be lucky to see doctor #204, but more likely a long wait. Sorry no appointments, first-come first-serve. Please take a number and have a seat and the nurse practitioner will see you later this evening.

PS - The current crop of medical students is far less qualified than their peers of 20 years ago. If I controlled admissions, the admittance rate would drop to 1 in 25.
