2007 stunned the scientific community when the arctic sea ice hit an all time low. Way below what any scientist would have guessed. They also, I believe made a first succesful northwest passage without ice breakers.

Here is a graph of arctic sea ice. But it is Greenland's and antarctica's astounding melting that is raising the sea ice.
