BP's volume and volatility have declined, since June, to pre-spill levels. It's a large-cap well-researched and well-followed company, so surprises are unlikely. The transaction costs are likely to eat up potential profits. IMO, for BP, options at this point probably aren't any more useful than the stock itself. Buying LEAP calls in June would have been a good idea, if you were smart enough to pick the bottom. Too late now. Pick a more interesting (and riskier) stock for an option play.

disclosure: I've had a lot of (mostly successful) experience (not with energy stocks), with LT calls (bullish bet), and using options for protection.
