Do you think that society as a whole (not "a" society, like the American Cancer Society or the Society of Jesus) is separate from the state or government? I took Greg's post and his reply to mean "society" as including the populace. You are discussing elements, segments. Naturally subsocieties can be found that are quite nonsecular. But I took breaking society into its elements as not in line with the query. From the original post, examples of societies are Europeans, Africans, and Americans. (Of these, only Africa has nation societies that are expressly not secular.)

If you accept that qualification, I am hard-pressed to come up with a society that doesn't have a government, nor a government that is separate from its host society.

"Atheism is as much a belief as any other belief."

Anything accepted on faith is just a belief but try explaining that to someone that believes in AGW.
