Lucidity is one of the first concepts I think of when considering mind extension. In lucid dreams you become aware of the fact that you are dreaming and are able to take a more directional role in the path of the dream. The same is true in what we call wakeful time. You can drift along experiencing life at a low or dim level of awareness, while raising the level of awareness in wakeful life is much like becoming lucid in a dream; as your realizations of circumstance and the role you can play in circumstance becomes enhanced. It is like plugging into a greater awareness and so in that way expanding your mind, you can also unplug by going back to a drifting less mindful sort of existence. Don't know if that contributes anything to Clark's questions or not.

This is your second post from a source called The Stone. I googled that after your first post but could not find it. I'd like to navigate the site. Might I interest you in posting a link?
