Chartists was the name for mappers. They had sheep skin and where they ran out of that they used the skin from investors in offshore gold mines who had committed suicide. Amazingly they found it had the same lexical characteristics and made good maps. The term charter was used with gay abandon at the time. They drew up charters with the kings from all sorts of special interest groups. Many people made their living off the forest so the charters were called forest charters. We were probably such a family hiding out in the woods sneaking into town to draw up a petition or threat to the king for land rights so that our robbery cartel preying on unwary travellers had some property legitimacy.
