More precisely a "Bush tax cut extension bill" that expires right in the middle of the next election.

Wrong. The Bush bill expires at the end of the year and taxes are scheduled to go up. The Obama bill is for next year and will reduce the taxes back to current levels. The bill going forward is Obama's.
