I know what you mean, but when discussing, say, abortion or gun ownership, the way a person answers isn't a question of character but of moral compass. I would have to engage in contortions to avoid the term. So I choose to fight a little, and I am reclaiming the word for my own use from the arbiters of context. (grin)

Another thought on the topic ...
"Character" is close to the term "integrity" which is a moral measure. But integrity has important differences from the words morality and ethics. Integrity sorta splits the difference between morality and ethicalness (oy!), but sorta not.
I apologize for the vagueness. I love words, but they can be tough to corner.
I understand that's how "cat people" feel about their perferred pets...
