Leading Indicators Reveal Strongest Increase Since March

The Index of Leading Indicators rose 1.1% in November, its strongest monthly increase since March. The Briefing.com consensus expected the index to increase 1.2%.

Since 7 out of the 10 components are known prior to the release of the report, no one should quibble with the reading being slightly less than what the consensus expected. Further, the fact that the index has increased 19 out of the last 20 months should be enough to support the notion that the economy is gaining strength.

The pace of deliveries (+0.43%), interest rate spread (+0.25%), and jobless claims (0.18%) were the biggest contributors to the November reading while building permits (-0.11%) was the only drag.

The Coincident Index and the Lagging Index were mixed, with the former up 0.1% and the latter down 0.1%.
