I had my best year since 2000 mostly with buying 6 to 9 month calls and holding for months while stocks went up. Some I sold and some I exercised. Currently own almost no calls just stock.
I manage my children's college accounts and have held APL the entire year without a single trade in those accounts. I will have to diversify at some point as the accounts are starting to get pretty large. They are up almost 250% but I think APL is still a decent buy for an MLP.
My best idea for next year is SD Sandridge. I have been selling puts on it and doing very well. I normally try to avoid stocks that do not pay out dividends or distributions but the turnarounds are very tempting. Sandridge's Mississippi oil play in Oklahoma should tip the company into positive cashflow and they have already written down the very significant natural gas assets. If oil prices stay rich the stock should be a large winner.
I do get a lot of ideas from this board for stock investing.
