I heard the functionally addled Thomas say the others only allowed them 9 pages of dissent and that the publication was being delayed only because the "majority" wanted to publish a book at the same time. He didn't really answer the question why they wanted to eliminate certain words. There's probably more out there on the schism between the two parties, but as you say, it's really pretty much irrelevant since there are already numerous well-written books on the subject.
