Not at all. Nor do I want my kids to start.

But I know a failed policy when I see one. The war on drugs is kind of like waiting for the Cuban embargo to make Castro comply with our demands. After 48 years, you get the feeling it just might not work.

The flow of drugs into this country is, after 40 years of escalating intervention, not even slowed. More people than ever are being killed by violent gangs. Over 30,000 Mexicans is what jose tells us. That's over half the number of U.S. troops that died in Vietnam.

We have spent trillions over four decades and gotten nowhere. Prohibition showed very clearly what happens when the government tries to ban intoxicants.

It appears to be a basic fact of life in this country, that people are going to drink and do drugs, and there is very little the government can do to stop it.
