It's hard to know what spectrum is really worth: <We both had a sense this would going to be a hugely profitable thing for those who were bidding.> As electronics get cheaper, more powerful and smaller, the need for more spectrum reduces.

Other than in particularly crowded places, there doesn't seem to be a spectrum shortage.

Because of the sudden increase in cyberphones, spectrum loading has increased. But that will probably ease as femtocells become common and wifi carries huge load with fibre backhaul rolling out.

LTE is just getting going.
