Whereas you point out that "only one unnamed company is rumoured to be
experiencing problems", Carl states that "many device manufacturers have expressed that this transition is much more difficult than originally anticipated". I believe that your optimism, while refreshing, is out of phase with market psychology, which initially tends to discount uncertainty with the worst case scenario. While I agree with your optimistic (realistic) long-term scenario of the transition, there are very few players who tend to hold these cyclical companies long-term because of their volatility. Timing is everything in life, and especially so with cyclical stocks. As Cary says (paraphrasing Bernard Baruch) we should attempt to buy when BLOOD is running in the streets.
