I know it is a good investment when my neighborhood security patrol sends me this message: Apparently, copper thefts are again popular with the criminal element. This is no doubt due to the increasingly high prices being received for scrap copper. There have been several recent thefts of copper downspouts in the Uptown area , but all officers within the patrol districts will be on the alert for this problem. Be watchful for suspicious persons lurking in alleyways and front yards, particularly around houses that have copper gutters and downspouts. These individuals may not be in the act of stealing copper, but they may be casing the area to come back later. Because copper in bulk is heavy, vehicles are usually used to transport stolen copper. Typically, a pick-up or van is used, sometimes with the logo of a plumbing company painted on the side. (Be especially suspicious if the logo of a plumbing company is attached to the side of a vehicle on a removable magnetic sign.) Copper thieves sometimes work in groups of two or more, with one individual acting as a lookout. However, an experienced residential copper thief working alone will simply wait for a security patrol vehicle to pass by, knowing the vehicle will not likely return for many minutes. Officers have been asked to double back along streets that they have just passed. Also, the use of side alley lights is now authorized for patrol officers to use to better illuminate front yards and walkways, but will be discontinued if the residents complaint about the lights. Officers are getting to know which houses have copper gutters and downspouts and are making a point to check these houses carefully on their first patrol or the day and thereafter. All residents are asked to report anything that looks suspicious in nature to the patrol, as soon as it is noticed: XXXXXXXXXX. As always, play it safe and call the patrol whenever in need. They are on duty 24/7.
